Abandoning traditional training methods, which tend to use punishment and physical dominance, progressive dog-trainer Cristine Dahl incorporates studies of animal behavior and humane treatment into an approach called Learning Theory. Here it is — penned by a recognized dog-training authority and filled with in-depth, step-by-step instructions, and organized by behavior problems.

Question by Nina M: How do I basic train my pug puppy?
I have been trying to basic train my 13 week old pug puppy. He does great when I have a treat to give him, but when I try to get him to sit, lay down, heel, or any other trick without a treat, he wont do it. How do I teach him to do these things without always receiving a reward afterward?

Answer by whittandwhitt There’s one simple trick you can teach you pug.
Sit. Put a treat above his head and push his butt down say “sit” to him. Do this for several days. Then he should start sitting by himself.
