I do not have a set schedule, so, I cannot committ to going to an actual class, so, I want to start to train my puppy myself, at home. He is now 12 weeks old. Is that too young to start training the basic :sit, stay, heel & come commands? What’s the best at home method? Do clickers really work? What are other options b/c my dog just seems confused when I tried using a clicker. What are the best books &/or DVD’s that help in training?

My husband and I just rescued a 7 week old puppy from the local shelter. Her mom was caught in a hunting trap out in the woods and actually gave birth to her litter while trapped. Someone found the 7 babies, and the mamma and brought them to the shelter. 2 of the babies have died, and we were worried they weren’t getting the care they really needed. Turns out, we took her to the vet, she had worms HORRIBLE and she has a viral infection. Now, I dont really want to push training on her that much untill she starts to feel alittle better, but I didn’t know if she is too young to be potty trained outside, or the basic commands of sit and stay. She pottys only on the papers we lay down, but has the poopies because shes sick. Anyone have any suggestions about when to start training? Oh yeah, we named her lucky =)

I just want to find a package that I can get that has a puppy bed, potty training pads, food/water bowls, chew toys and so forth. This is the first puppy I ever have had and want to start right but not spend a fortune. Thank you all for your input!

She’s doing well and is learning quickly. My problem is staying out of a specific area of the house. She always wants to be with me. We have an area borded off with plywood about 3 feet hight that she can clear easily and jumps over whenever I give her the stay command. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. When I scold her she hides and won’t come to me. It’s seems to be a constant battle. Question: Do we continue with the barrier or take it down and just let her come back with me to this part of house? (It’s our bedrooms and formal living room.) We’ve been putting her in her kennel when she jumps over and disobeys, but I don’t want the kennel to be punishment. Help!

I’m planning on getting a little jack russell terrier puppy that’s 6 months old or less. What are the basic trainings of a dog and how do you train it?

Keep it short, keep it simple, and keep it fun…. and start NOW!
We raise labs and we’ve had an 8 week old lab consistently retrieving tennis balls and frisbees for us before we sold her. But we never did it for long periods of time and she loved it. My wife also taught another 10 week old puppy to sit and speak on command. It’s never too early, as long as it’s fun for the pup. Build a good relationship when the dog is young, and you’ll have a very willing learner when the puppy is old enough for some serious training.

(A slightly “lighter” question this time, my friends! 
What am I doing wrong? We’ve been trying to crate-train him, and have been taking him outside to do his business every hour or so. He DOES do his business outside, but then — when he comes back into the house — does it AGAIN on the floor!
He’s not a stupid puppy — he’s learning other commands and behaviors very successfully. Obviously, I’m not “speaking dog” well enough for him to understand that it’s NOT okay to urinate and defecate in the house.
One important point in his defense: he had an intestinal infection when we first brought him home, which gave him severe diarrhea (which he couldn’t control), so the house-training WAS set back for at least a week or so.
Any advice?
