Puppy Basic Training Difficulties?
i have a golden retriever pup 9 weeks old and for the last 3 days, ive been trying to teach it to sit, come, and fetch and ive been having a really hard time training it.
1.) sit- sit has been really frustrating especially since ive read that its supposed to be relatively easy. i let the puppy see a treat over its head and gently push its bottom down until it sits then praise and give treat when it does it right. this has been going on for 3 days and he still doesnt sit on command.
2.) come – its attention always seems to be everywhere else but with me. how do i teach him to come on command?
3.) fetch – this is weird coz i thought retrieving would be 2nd nature to him but he just gets the toy and runs to his corner and chew it up.
please help, im a first time owner and im trying really hard :/ im enrolling him in obedience classes but that wont be very soon and i want to let him know at least the basics.

So glad to hear of a responsible person enrolling him into obedience classes so that the trainers can train YOU how to train your dog. Well done, and hope you have great fun with it.
We all have to start somewhere, and it is true that the more you can get into him in the next few weeks then the easier it becomes.
First of all try word association. In other words when HE does a sit —issue the word Sit. When he lays down – issue the word Down. Do it especially with the “wee wee” command.
I never actually, even gently, push the bottom down for a sit. Many dogs will react AGAINST that and make it harder anyway. Just keep up with the titbit over the head bit, and be very patient. You are expecting a fair bit for a nine week old. Keep it short and simple.
When it comes to the recall — then you have to really sound far more interesting than what he is looking at. Clap your hands and make a big deal out of it.
As for the fetch — he will learn that you are fun to play with, and you are the one that throws a toy for him to fetch. Be GOOD FUN.
Word of warning for a large breed — make sure you don’t overexercise. When you start walking out then 5 mins per day per month of life is the general rule. And when playing in the garden allow him to dictate his sleep times, try not to wake him for play etc.
Best of luck.
9 weeks old….it’s not even done socializing. If you’d done proper research you’d know a puppy shouldn’t be separated from it’s mother until 12 weeks at the soonest. Let it socialize and grow properly first so it doesn’t have huge social problems later in life (mental and physical).
well you can only teach a dog tricks on at a time so practise him on sit . i have a dog chewy and he knows sit . just push him down on his bottom and then say sit keep doing this for a good while and he will learn and when he knows it try him on new tricks
First off do not teach to many things at once.
1} take the treat just in front of its nose and move it up just a bit and tell him or her to sit and it well take some time.
2} Don’t get so frustrated your pup is only 9 weeks old
If you follow religiously the advise given in the book The Dog Listener you will have the best trained dog on the block. Sorry I can’t remember author, only that it was written by a woman.
Your puppy is a baby and you are trying to teach him too many things at once.
Teach him to sit and when he has that down perfectly, then go on to come. Don’t move on to another command until he gets the one you are teaching him right.
Always finish your training on a high note. e.g. when he gets it right, make a big fuss of him, treat him and end the training session.
Next day do the sit command again and if you are sure he knows it well, then you go on to the next command..again finishing on a high note. If he doesn’t get the new command go back to ’sit’ and finish on that.
As for fetch, that is a game we play here. I usually finish training with a game of fetch as a reward.
You’re expecting too much of a 9 week old puppy. You’re trying too hard.
Puppy lessons should last 3 minutes. That’s it.
Think of a 9 week old puppy is sort of like a 1 year old baby. Sure, they can walk around, but they don’t have attention span, they can’t remember more than a few hours at a time, and they have NO bladder control. LOL!
“Come” works best at feeding time. Shake the bowl, use his name, praise him and give him his meal.
Practice “Sit” a few times a day. A few. 3! 3 times a day, while the puppy is looking at the food in your hand, say “sit” and push the pups bottom down. Praise lavishly.
“Fetch” comes later. Don’t expect reliable fetching until 6 months or so. Again, babies have very little attention span, and very little memory.
Give him a break.
Wait for him to grow up a little.
Remember, the ENTIRE FIRST YEAR of a puppy’s life is challenging. Be consistent and be patient.
Enjoy this time. Watch your puppy. Just like a human baby, puppies learn from experience. It’s often funny to see them do and see things for the first time. Puppies often scare themselves the first time they bark at a stranger. It’s sort of sweet.
Just keep at it.
Make sure you’re doing it right! Nothing is worse then someone saying ’sitsitsitsitsitsit’ constantly, and then expecting it to happen when they say it just once. ONLY say sit when he sits- and reward then.
Come is difficult, you have to leash him on a long rope, call come, when he gets to you give him amazaing treats. The day he doesn’t ome to you you need to repeat this training until he comes reliably.
Some dogs just don’t get fetch- my dog didn’t start fetching until she was a year old. It help to throw the toy, when they put their mouth on it get a new ty and make a fuss until they come to you then throw that toy after getting the old toy.
Don’t expect much over 3 days, he’s only young, watch some training videos and read some books
