Potty training an older dog?
Neil asked:
My dog is two and a half and we’re just now getting around to finally potty training him. For the most part he knows to do his business outside, but if no one is looking and he has to go, he won’t hesitate to go on the floor. So he has to wear a diaper at all times, put still won’t hesitate to pee in it. Any suggestions for potty training an older dog?
I DO NOT need to hear how i should have potty trained him earlier. that does nothing. if you have something to help, feel free to post. but please keep unnecessary comments to your self.

You house train any dog the same way. Take him out at regular times and praise/reward him when he goes in the right place. When inside, you must watch him and be ready to get him out if you think he’s about to go. You said it yourself – if no one is looking, he’ll go on the floor – so make sure someone is always looking, so that you can prevent him from going on the floor! When you are gone or to busy to watch him carefully enough, he should be crated or confined to a small room/area.

Be careful how you handle the situation with the 2 dogs or it could get worse. Make sure you you give them attention, treats, love, affection together so they associate good things happening when they around each other. If you get excited and yell when she growls or snaps she could get more excited and aggressive b/c she only knows your upset and he must be the reason. I have calmly and gently rolled my dog onto her side and hold her by the scruff until she is calm, at which point I would invite the puppy over and pet both of them. I do this without saying a word, it tells the dominant dog that you are the leader and you have things under control and she doesnt need to do the reprimanding. If your unsure or it get worse ,seek help and get a book dealing with this subject.
Thanks for sharing this knowledge. This information will save me a lot of frustration and failure. Knowledge gives success. Thanks again !!!
the are sprays that you can find at pet stores that help potty train dogs. just spray that where you dont want the dog to pee at. what you can also try is when the dog pees some where take it the and with a rolled up newspaper or something like that tap it on the nose (gently) and in an authoritative voice let her know that thats not right
good luck with that
older dogs are harder to train. better to start younger
Crate train it, keep it in a crate that is large enough for it to lay down in, but not big enough to see him walk back and forth in it. Keep him in it when you go to sleep and to work. It will soon learn that it isn't good to pee inside because they won't have enough room to lay down inside.
