my daughter has a general routing and has since she was only a few months old (she is now 21 months). the routine is just a guide that we go by it's not really a strict routine that we have to abide by.
best example is that she wakes up around 8am, she has breakfast around 930 am she gets a bath and then we do whatever is planned for that day. lunch is usually around 12-1230 even if we are out and about we usually stop for something or i bring something with me. if we are home then she gets a nap around 130-200. if we are not home then she doesn't get a nap. then dinner around 5-530 and bed around 830-9pm.
whatever we are doing in between nap and bed time is usually different day to day. if we are out and she doesn't get a nap she goes to bed a little earlier.
a routine IS good for children but at the same time you don't have to follow a strict routine where you HAVE to put baby down for a nap at this exact time everyday. if we are at the park, or if we take a trip to the zoo or even the store i can't rush right home to make sure our routine is being followed. i just use our routine as a general guideline for how the day is going to go. it doesn't always go EXACTLY the same way and that's ok.

I have found that it was much easier when I had a dog already house broken. I also did what you are doing. Once they started playing, it was time to go inside so that potty time was just potty time. I also praised like crazy when they did their business and gave a treat..no potty no treat. I always kept play time separate from potty time so they didn't get confused and I would always repeat a word while they were out there too like "go potty" so they knew it was potty time. Good Luck!!

Children love to be the center of positive attention. When they know it is a possibility they will try to obtain that positive reinforcement. In the other case of a teacher with zero positive reinforcement students may be more likely to continue bad behavior because there's no reason not to. It's either get in trouble or get ignored. They will seek that attention one way or another, so if no positive reinforcement is present they will seek the negative attention. It's just how the child's mind works.
