Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Needs Training?

Two year old female Cavalier has gone to basic puppy training, knows “Sit” and “Off/Down” (Pretty much only when she feels like it). When we purchased her we did a lot of research and found this is supposed to be a moderately smart dog. Does anybody have any tricks/commands to teach and advice on how to do it? Thanks =)

Even though they are intelligent enough to be responsive to commands, and they are usually easy to train. I would continue to work with her to perfect the commands you have already taught her. If she doesn’t listen and follow every single time, then shes not respecting your wishes as much as she should.
I own a larger breed and my big commands are sit, down (for him to lay down) whoa (to stop walking) and stay.
Once you have have mastered the simple commands you could work on harder tricks such as play dead or role over. There are several books online that will teach you how to do these tricks. They are very easy to teach using positive re-enforcement.
Best of luck!
Yes it is true that Cavalier are smart but you do need to work with them every so often so that they can retain the training memory. Sure they learn quick but with any dog you need to be persistent with the training and remind them every once in a while what is tolerated and what isn’t. Best to set boundaries. Don’t let the dog get away with everything. Use a stern voice command when the dog is acting up and it will learn to listen to you seeing you as the pack leader and that you mean business.
If a dog only does something “pretty much only when she feels like it” then it is down to the dog not having the bonding or the respect for the owner. I would go back to class. Basic puppy isn’t enough to really get that good bond going.
Although I train, I also go to several clubs a week with a new pup and stay until at least 18 months old. They love it for a start and it is really good for them. This will improve her reactions to commands and then you will be able to teach other things.
Katie, I love the look of a cavalier king charles spaniel. They are so cute.
Hot pursuit and High Stakes. Played them all day everyday. Back in the good ole’ days…
Dna is the only way to tell for sure. The CKCSC require dna testing prior to breeding, the AKC requires it at times. Was this done?If not ask some experienced cavalier people to evaluate your dog for an educated quess
