If you are talking about basic obedience training, try to find a trainer who does nothing but positive reinforcement training with non-physical methods. These dogs can become VERY aggressive when trained with negative methods. They are very independant and can be quite stubborn, and if you don’t get control of them through obedience training, they will run your life for you.
If you are talking about agility, there are some great places all over the country that you can take your dog to to learn. There are also some “farms” that teach herding with real cattle and sheep. They assess your dog in an Buy Xenical pills afternoon for its natural ability, and if the dog passes, they’re in. Try googling cattle dog clubs.
If you have a misbehaving ACD who is scaring you, you will probably need to hire a trainer for in-home tutoring. Just remember that you are the one who will need to be trained to train the dog-the trainer shouldn’t be doing the work for you. When the trainer leaves, it will be just you and the dog.
I am the owner of a very abused rescued ACD. She was about a 9 on a scale of 1-10 for scary. I hired Barkbusters to come to my home (because I couldn’t take her out in public withput risking the public) and train me to get control of my dog. Six months later, she is a very well-behaved dog. She still has some of her fear issues, but I now know how to keep her calm and focused when she comes across one. She can now go out in public (carefully) without risking people’s health, and even allows some people to pet her. She still has to wear a muzzle at the vet-she hates him.
I found this training the absolute right thing for my girl, as she responded right away and began to respect me as the one in control. Being an ACD, she will still challenge my authority every day, but I know how to deal with that and she is a great dog! We are going to start agility in the spring, to give her something to do, and I am also thinking of a herding assessment as well.
There was an article in a western US paper recently about a cattle dog girl who saved her owner from a deadly snake attack and is now in a coma, not expected to live. You don’t get that kind of loyalty just anywhere. These are such special dogs.
Yahoo has a Cattle Dog group that you can join-it is full of breeders, trainers, ranchers, and rescuers of ACDs, so the info you can get is valuable. I joined back when I was frustrated and it was great to hear different ideas and get some validation when I thought things weren’t going well.
Good luck with your dog-they are a 24 hour a day entertainment!
