Can you train a 7 week old puppy basic commands?
My husband and I just rescued a 7 week old puppy from the local shelter. Her mom was caught in a hunting trap out in the woods and actually gave birth to her litter while trapped. Someone found the 7 babies, and the mamma and brought them to the shelter. 2 of the babies have died, and we were worried they weren’t getting the care they really needed. Turns out, we took her to the vet, she had worms HORRIBLE and she has a viral infection. Now, I dont really want to push training on her that much untill she starts to feel alittle better, but I didn’t know if she is too young to be potty trained outside, or the basic commands of sit and stay. She pottys only on the papers we lay down, but has the poopies because shes sick. Anyone have any suggestions about when to start training? Oh yeah, we named her lucky =)

you should wait until her stomach problems are a bit better but you can generally start training pups at 7 weeks (mine handled it fine) but if shes running around and playing and eating fine she can probably handle a ’sit’ lesson though serious potty training may have to wait until shes all better you can still take her out when you think she has to go so she gets the idea (as long as vet okays going outside)
You can do training now and start a schedule, but don’t get upset with her, since she is sick. Once she’s perkier, you can work on sit, stay, etc. Good luck with Lucky.
no respectable shelter would have given you a 7 week old puppy. at that age its like giving commands to a baby they don’t get it yet. it can be done but its hard and she is sick
at 4 monthes you can expect ypur puppy tp respond to come at 6 monthes you can expect your puppy to respond to heel down sit fetach and stay thou some dogs might do it earlyer. at 8 monthes you can expect ypur puppy to hold it expelsion for 8 hours but again some do it earlyer.
Yeah you should start training a puppy from the very begining… what isnt suitable dog behaviour isnt suitable puppy behaviour… i started my pups training at 6 weeks… and he coukld sit, lay down. beg, roll over, come, stay, heel, be quiet, out of the kitchen and alot more things i asked by 9 weeks… just be patient and repetative… always ask for something the same way, using the same cue… and yur pup will get the hang of it in no time… as for potty training.. designate an area for your pup to go to the toilet in.. and you need to take her there about every two hours ( call he and make her walk there as this reienforces how t get there… carring her there wont teach her how to get there).. especially after she has eaten, been playing or sleeping… and eventually she will understand but remember a pups bladder is only very small and she wont have full control for a good while yet… so little accidents should never be punished… if you catch her in the act a firm no and then move her to the designated area… Congrats on adopting a new puppy wish you all the best of luck with her
Start working with her now. Just don’t push until she is well. My dogs are rescued as well. They are the best! Lucky is a perfect name for her.
They say to start training them as young as possible, i would say to start training her but not get upset with her, and take it easy scince she is sick, But shes never to young to learn!
Housetraining can and should start from the first day a puppy enters your home, and no she is not too young to start going outside. Don’t expect quick results, but teaching her from the get-go where you will expect her to go for the rest of her life will make the whole process easier and quicker. Her bladder is very tiny right now, so take her out VERY often until she gets a little older. Also keep in mind that all dogs learn at a different pace, so be patient and consistent and she WILL eventually get it. Just don’t expect any miracles, especially at this young age. It will likely be several months before she is 100% housetrained.
As for teaching basic commands, this can also start pretty much right away, but since a 7-week-old pup is going to have an attention span of about 30 seconds and a mind that is not fully developed, don’t expect her to actually learn the commands yet. But it is never too early to start! Just be patient and consistent, and make the training sessions short, fun, and filled with praise. If either of you gets bored or frustrated, it’s time to stop and try again the next day. All pups learn at a different pace (one of mine understood “sit” within 10 minutes – the other took almost two weeks to learn it), so just keep at it and she’ll eventually get it! But again, don’t expect any miracles just yet!
Good luck, and good for you for adopting her! I hope the mom is ok too!
Usually you can teach them simple hand commands by that age. If you want Lucky to go to the bathroom outside, try taking her for longer walks, and when she goes, reward her. Dogs learn best from rewards. Also, you can take her outside about 30 minutes after she eats, give her time to digest. Sit commands are easy: Stand in front of her, hold a treat in your hand, in a fist, but so she can she the treat. Slowly pull the treat up over her head so she is forced to sit back in order to watch/get at it. THEN give her the treat.
I’d give Lucky some time on the “stay” command, but once she’s ready, get her into a sit position, and have someone hold her there as you walk away. Reward her, and over time she should be able to do this when no one is holding her there.
But I’d wait until she mostly gets over her sickness, even if it takes a while.
Hi I hope she gets well soon. She was Lucky to be rescued.
Training should start the day you bring the puppy home as it needs to know its place in the family, and a pack leader needs to be established early on so you get respect.
I am not an expert by any means, but we have just recently got a puppy. He is a Staffordshire bull terrier, and all bull breeds are very stubborn, but he is doing fantastic with clicker training. If you are not familiar with it there are many good books, and plenty of info on the net, but basically dogs learn by association. Every time the dog does somthing right, you click, and treat. So if you are teaching them to sit, the moment their rear touches the floor, you click and treat. They learn that the click means something good is going to happen, and so learn what response from them is needed to gain their treat. I have a book by Karen Pryor. Very simple to read and follow, and it helped to gain results very quickly.
You need to establish the commands you will use, and all family members need to use the same ‘cues’ as the dog will only recognise sounds, not actual words.
Try simple ones- sit, down, stay, and come.
I know she is poorly, but try several short sessions of a few minutes each day when she is alert, and you will see how quikly she will respond.
I guess with her bad tummy also you should not treat her too much, but maybe set a little bit of her regular meals aside for this purpose. If you are training a dog at any time for considerable periods of time their feed needs to be adjusted anyhow.
With the ‘potty’ training, you should start taking her outside in your garden, as long as there have not been any other dogs outside. She will need her vaccinations before she can come into contact with other dogs.
You will recognise her signs eventually, like walking in circles when she needs to go, but first of all take her outside the minute she wakes up, and always after every meal and play time. Praise like she has peed gold! It will be easy after that. She will need plenty of trips while she is young, but this will reduce as she gets older. Try and take her to the same place outside too, and this will help promote clean living!
If she has an accident indoors, just clean up and don’t punish.
Dogs thrive on fun and praise! all they want is to be loved, and to please you. Dogs live for the moment, they do not remember what happened yesterday, nor do they worry about tommorrow!
If you make mistakes, don’t worry. You need to stay calm around her, and she will be too. Dogs do pick up on emotions, so don’t train if you are stressed or ill.
Try and live a normal life too, do the hoovering, play music etc. The more you can introduce your puppy to the better.
Socialisation is vital, this means kids of all ages, other animals, people, hoovers, lawn-mowers etc, and when you are able to walk her outside cars and everything else!!
Just be a responsible owner, and kids need to be taught how to treat a dog. My kids are almost 3 years old, and 16 months old, so I am teaching them all to behave around one another, and I never ever leave them alone together.
We have a dog crate too, which is always a good idea. It provides a safe haven for your puppy, so it will have its own place to escape to, and also you can shut it in overnight, and while you are out, or to keep the dog and kids safe etc.
A crate will also protect your home and personal belongings when pup starts teething!!! Do not use it as a place for punishment, or it will eventually learn to associate it with this.
This will be difficult when you want to place the puppy in the crate while you go out.
Puppies are like kids, little sponges that take it all in, so the earlier you start the better!
I am actually going to look into agility training now, as my dog is actually thriving on learning. He sits by my foot the minute I reach for the clicker. Not bad for a 14 week old pup.
Now if I can just clicker train my husband and kids…..
I have grown up with dogs, but now I have taken a little time just reading a few bits on the net, and books, it is only now that I am just begining to understand them. My dog and I are learning together.I look back at previous dogs, and can now see that they were the pack leaders, not me.
Also look up Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer. He has many tips which work!!!
I hope that my little bit of knowledge has helped, and I wish you all a happy fun life together! I hope lucky gets well too. By the way, what breed is she?

She just cant hold it for 4 hours. She is a puppy. She will eventually be able to hold it, but it takes time. There is no way to get her to stop peeing in there except to not leave her in there that long.
